Supporting the Pacific response to COVID-19

We continue to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the Pacific in the fight against COVID-19. We have provided emergency funding to Fiji, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga and Vanuatu, and are working with many countries to manage the economic impacts of the pandemic.

Leading the Way: Betty’s Story
Betty Joshua, a single mother from PNG's East Sepik Province, is leading the way in her community. Through the World Bank funded Productive Partnerships in Agriculture Project, she has supported more than 250 women farmers in her district to earn an income from cocoa. The project has supported 24,000 women to earn an income, save money and strengthen their roles in growing coffee and cocoa industries. Watch Betty's story.
Tonga: Stronger schools, brighter futures  
After the devastating Cyclone Gita hit Tonga in 2018, 109 of 150 schools were either damaged or destroyed. With US$13.81 million World Bank funding, we have been supporting the Government of Tonga get Tongan students get back to safe, conducive and disaster resilient classrooms.  Learn more about the rebuilding process and hear from many of Tonga's next generation.

Bridges to brighter futures for 11,000 Solomon Island families
The Solomon Islands Community Access and Urban Services Enhancement (CAUSE) Project, has created more than 110,000 days of work for Solomon Islanders. The US$15 million project is getting unemployed Solomon Islanders to work to improve basic infrastructure and services for vulnerable, urban populations across three provinces. Read more.
Expanding our presence in Federated States of Micronesia
We recently signed a new partnership agreement with the Government of the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM), paving the way for more World Bank projects throughout the North Pacific region. The new agreement will also lead to a new, dedicated World Bank office for the North Pacific, which will support our work in FSM, Marshall Islands and Palau. Read more.
A sustainable future for Kiribati’s fisheries
Fish are Kiribati's most important economic asset. The US$19.5m World Bank-supported Kiribati Pacific Regional Oceanscape Program (PROP) will help protect Kiribati's fisheries industry through more sustainable fishing approaches, better monitoring and surveillance of fishing areas, as well as safeguarding the livelihoods of fishing communities, especially for women and youth in Kiribati.
